Top 5 Crochet Threads for 2021

Monaco Crochet Thread

Crochet thread is a popular alternative for crafters, who want to expand beyond basic yarn to something that yields finer detail, but leverages the same techniques they are used to.

At Lyn’s Crafts we have lots of articles explaining what crochet thread is, how it used, etc. I will put links to our other crochet threads resources below.

In this post we will cover the top 5 crochet threads for 2021.

Monaco

Monaco Size 8 Crochet Threads

Monaco Crochet Thread is, hands down, our best-selling crochet thread. It is manufactured and sold mainly in the Philippines. Oddly, the Monaco company seems perfectly content to only sell their products in Asia. There are no distributors here in the US. That makes Lyn’s Crafts one of the few US based companies to carry the complete line of Monaco Crochet Thread.

Monaco crochet thread is interesting, in that is it one of the few size 8 threads. It occupies a sweet spot between the standard size 3 and 5, and the more popular size 10.

Being size 8 means it just a bit thicker than size 10, making it a little bit easier to work with, specially if you are just starting out.

There are 80 solid and 23 variegated colors. All of the threads are 100% mercerized cotton.

The balls are 175 meters (191 yards long) and weigh in at 50 grams each. The threads are incredibly soft and easy to work with.

Alize Miss

The Alize company is a manufacturer of yarns and threads based in Turkey. They manufacture and distribute a wide variety of yarns and threads, with 102 distinct products in their brand line. They cover almost every type of yarn and thread available on the market today.

Even so, they are not well known in the US. Typically, you’ll fine Alize yarns on eBay, Etsy or Amazon stores.

A while ago I decided to import a few select brands from Alize to carry in our store, and since we specialize in crochet thread, we started with Alize Miss.

Alize Miss is made from 100% Mercerized cotton and is manufactured in Turkey.

Alize Miss crochet thread is a high quality mercerized crochet thread. Unlike many of the other brands of threads that we carry, Alize Miss is not widely distributed and thus not heavily discounted. Alize Miss is usually found online on Etsy, eBay or Amazon. Lyn’s Crafts is one of the few US companies to carry a limited supply of Miss Crochet Thread.

Alize Miss is machine washable in warm water, don’t bleach, and they block well.

The Alize Miss line color selection has 30 shades to choose from.

Lizbeth

Lizbeth is made from 100% Mercerized Egyptian cotton and is manufactured in China.

Lizbeth crochet thread is a high quality mercerized crochet thread. They are widely distributed so you can get them at very reasonable, often highly discounted prices, both locally and online. The color quality is excellent.

They are machine washable in warm water, no bleach, and block well.

One of the best features of the Lizbeth line is the sheer variety of colors to choose from. As you can see from the chart above most of the thread lines have over well over 100 different shades for you to choose from. The means that the possibilities are endless.

The only real downside to Lizbeth threads is the yardage. Designed primarily for tatting, which creates small, intricate designs, the balls are relatively small.

Aunt Lydia’s

Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Threads

This Should come as no surprise. Aunt Lydia’s is the most popular brand of crochet thread on the market today.

Distributed by Coats and Clark under the Red Heart Brand, Aunt Lydia’s is made from 100% mercerized cotton, is available in 4 sizes and is made in India.

Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread is a first quality crochet thread, produced by a company with a long history of manufacturing high quality products, particularly threads. That said, they are also, so widely distributed that you can get them at very reasonable, often highly discounted prices, both locally and online. The color quality is excellent. The threads are soft and easy to work with, even for beginners.

They are machine washable in warm water, no bleach, and block well.

In addition to their quality, they are very economical. With yardage of 150 yards for size 3 and 300 yards for size 10, you do not need to purchase as many balls as you would if using other threads.  If you need even more yardage you can get either the large size at 1000 yards: available in white, back, red and natural, or jumbo size at 2730 yards in white or natural.

Size 10 Classic comes in 53 shades, 12 variegated and 41 solids. Size 3 comes in 16 colors all solids. The metallic comes in 5 shades. The size 20 and Size 30 are only available in white and natural.

The only real downside to Aunt Lydia’s is limited color choices for sizes other than size 10. With only 16 shades for size 3, 5 shades of metallic, and two very basic shades in the smaller sizes, you will have to look elsewhere for greater variety of colors.

Elisa

Elisa Size 5 Crochet Threads

We often get request for size 5 crochet thread. Until now I had not found a size 5 that I really liked. Then I saw that Handy Hands introduced a new line of crochet threads called Elisa and I just had to try it.

While Elisa comes in both size 5 and size 10, I decided to focus on the size 5 first, then if I liked it, I would try their size 10. So far I love this thread.

Elisa Size 5 Crochet Thread is a 6 cord cordonnet, 100% cotton, combed, mercerized, and gas singed. It has a slightly softer feeling compared to the Lizbeth thread.

Elisa Size 5 is a wonderful size for knitting, crochet pieces such as Amigurumi, scarves, lace tops, baby dresses, or larger tatted pieces such as coasters, scarves, placemats, etc.

Each ball weights 50 grams and is about 217 yards (200 meters) long and is made in Austria.

Like most mercerized crochet threads they are machine washable.

Conclusion

This year we are happy to have some new threads to add to our list. While Aunt Lydia’s, Monaco, and Lizbeth are old favorites, Alize and Elisa are relatively new.

Yes, we do carry all of the threads in this review, but, that is not the main reason why they are including on the list. We wanted to provide a reference for the some of the top threads on the market to help you choose which is best for your next crochet, knitting or tatting project.

We hope you enjoyed this review and find the information contained within usefull.

Thanks and good luck on you next project.
